History:
The system
platform EC32 is based upon a real-time kernel and the Power-Pack from
Borland (Inprise) with the support of DPMI-32 (DOS Protected Mode
Interface). As a matter of fact it requires DOS as a starting platform
in order to run.
The need
for DOS might appear as an old fashioned way for modern software
systems. However, it provides the necessary resources for running the
DPMI system. Furthermore, after the DPMI system was terminated the
maintenance staff has convenient and easy to learn tools for
maintaining the software configuration files.
As times
goes by hardware is changing and sometimes a customer requires an
installation, which is independent from DOS.
The new
platform RTC-32 has a similar structure as EC32 but is now based upon
RTOS-32, a real-time kernel from On-Time. Metagraphics has been
terminated in this product since we had good reasons to use RTPEG, a
Portable Embedded Graphic system, written in C++.
Highlights
- RTC-32 does not need an operating system. It comes with its own bootcode!
- RTC-32 does not have an EXE-type file. No vulnerability regarding viruses is implied!
- RTC-32 does not need any outdated third party tools.
- RTC-32 has a Windows compatible API
- RTC-32 does not depend on any third party font library. It fully supports any font available under Windows.
- RTC-32 fully supports modern hardware-platforms based upon x86 processors like PCI and USB
- RTC-32 does not need additional drivers for network communication etc. Many available NIC are supported.
- RTC-32 comes with additional services like:
- TELNET access secured by MD5 user and password checking
- FTP access secured by MD5 user and password checking
- WEB-Server access secured by IP based authorization
- POP3 and mailto service for transmitting error conditions to maintenance groups or for sending statistical data
- SNMP module facilitates the full MIB-II functionality
- SMB (Server Message Block) is available as a server and as a client module.
Regarding
EC-32 we would make a very clear statement: This product is NOT
being discontinued. EC-32 and RTC-32 will both coexist and improvements will be
implemented in both systems at the same time if possible!
RTC-32 is
based upon EC32 and RTOS-32 and may be started using a DOS platform, without DOS by booting directly from the
HD or as a BIOS extension booted from ROM.
Programming
is now done in ANSI-C and C++, some small parts in Assembler.
Compiling and Remote-Debugging can be done by using Borland BCC32 or
Visual Studio from Microsoft.
