PROFIBUS - System Configurator SYCON

One of the components you need for a PROFIBUS installation ist the communication interface from Hilscher.
For making the configuration you have to install a software tool, also from Hilscher, the "System Configurator" SyCon. The software must be licensed. Please contact www.hilscher.com for further details.
The minimum hardware consists of a general purpose PC with an interface CIF30-FMS from Hilscher, an S7 system (Siemens) with a module CP443-5 Basic and a profibus connection cable.
For programming and testing a NULL modem cable is required for downloading the parameters to the CIF.
Furthermore for programming the S7 you may want to use a MPI-PC adapter, which allows access to the programming port of the S7-CPU from the serial port of a laptop.

Making a connection between a PC equipped with an FMS interface from Hilscher (see www.hilscher.com) and a PLC S7-400 requires the availability of the system configuration utility SyCon.

SyCon may be purchased directly from Hilscher and must be licensed.

General settings

Do not change the settings for "Little Endian", since this will influence the data representation inside the system software!

Want to know about the background of "Little Endian"?

BTW: Technical manuals must not be that serious all the time. ;-)

Check all parameters in order to coordinate them with the corresponding parameters of the S7 controller.

In case of a PROFIBUS-DP system with one master the only parameter which must be selected is the baud rate. If there is a FMS device on the bus or more than one master the parameter must be edited manually.
Edit Bus Param.

The baud rate of the PROFIBUS is common for all bus devices. Changing the baud rate has the consequence that all other parameters will be re-calculated. The System Configurator checks if the baud rate is supported by all configured devices on basis of the entries in the GSD file. If the System Configurator finds at least one device in the configuration that does not support the selected baud rate an error message appears.
You can check the actual parameters if you open the Edit Bus Parameter window with the button Edit. Some of the parameters can be changed individually. Please note if you make any changes in the bus parameters the parameter for the field Optimize must be changed from by SyCon to by User.
Caution: Changing the bus parameter individually can force a communication break.
The Highest Station Address is the highest bus address up to which the master will search for other active master stations to pass the send permission. This value should not be set below the master address.
With the flag Auto Clear it is possible to select a global error flag. The DP-Master supervises the process data transfer of all DP-slaves with a timer. If no successful data transfer can be established to one of these stations or an existing communication breaks during one data control time interval with activated option Auto clear modus on, the DP-Master leaves the user data, transfer and switches the outputs of all assigned DP-slaves to the fail-safe state.
For PROFIBUS-FMS are two profiles available:
- Siemens S7 Profile FMS
- Siemens S5 Profile FMS
Select profile S5 when using a Siemens PLC S5, select profile S7 when using a Siemens PLC S7 in the PROFIBUS-FMS network.

Defining communication objects

Communication objects have to be defined, if you want to use the FMS monitor section of SyCon. Make sure, you enter the exact type and size of the variable. Object Directory

Using FMS monitor

The FMS monitor allows to check the communication with the adjacent partner, e.g. the S7 PLC. You may read or write to a defined object. Attention: be careful not to write to an object in a live installation. This may be hazardous to the connected modules! FMS Monitor
