The administration of a warehouse requires the fast
and reliable delivery of data between the systems involved in this
application. There are not only commands for inserting or extracting
cars but also many status information, which tell the overlaid system
what lane is usable and what the current status of the conveyor system
is.
Since the communication is routed via a network and because there
are specific protocols involved, it would have been almost impossible
to make the implementation of those communication task on the lower
PLC level.
Therefore the PLC installation (an S5 from Siemens) was expanded with
a slot PC from VIPA. The PC fits perfectly into the I/O rack of the
S5 and communication with certain logic functions of the S5 via the
backplane.
The purpose of the application is strictly building an interface between
the S5 and the overlaid system. There is absolutely no data interpretation
or modification and no data will be stored in the PC.
The first picture shows a status screen of the PC with all 16 communication
channels, their current status and some relevant data regarding the
communication currently active on that channel.
The second picture shows a status screen of the PC with all 16 communication
channels, their current status and some relevant data currently exchanged
on that channel.
